I've hitchhiked from the services at Stansted Airport twice, both times waiting about 20 minutes, but had cars apologizing that they were going the wrong direction. Having a sign is an absolute must. (The staff at the restaurants are very friendly and gave me cardboard and wished me luck) The truckers I spoke to were very kind and helped me out by taking me all the way to Leicester, but you can really get most places from here. The actual exit isn't that great of a spot so I suggest going to the gas station exit where there's plenty of room to stop and you're very visible to drivers leaving and it's also opposite the trucker parking.

Not an optimal spot, I supposse, tried to move towards Leicester. Cars are driving fast, they can stop at the intersection with the Old Leicester Road, which is longer, than you might think looking at the map, but not as ideal, as a bus stop, for example. Took me a long time standing, but the first ride that stopped took me directly to Leicester.

Also note that if you walk through a field at the coach park end of the services you will reach a bus stop on the regular 24hr Skylink route linking Derby and Leicester with East Midlands airport, it is about £4 for a single ticket to either destination (2013)

It is a petrol station in the Highway M1. Its a very good place to start if you want to go far, and you dont have time to wait for a lift from the city center. To get here you can take the buses 13A, 48, 152, 153, 158 from the center of Leicester. The ticket is around 2 or 3 pounds. If you say you want to go as close as possible to the M1 bridge, the bus driver will tell you where to jump off along Hinckley road. You take then Baines Lane until you are in the petrol station, you can use this place both to go north or south (there is a bridge before the petrol station and in the restourant as well). I´ve use it on April 2008. There are no gates, easy acces. I was droped here when coming from London, I went back to the bus stop in Hinckley road, and somebody picked me up in 5 minutes to the city center. for further questions danielodv(at)gmail.com

Direction- M1 (south or north)

Leaving leicester, walking down Narborough Rd away from city centre, just past Tesco petrol station. We stood out in bus lane so were fairl visable, cars should be able to stop easily because of bus lane. We waited here for 3 minutesand got a lift straight to London. This is your last chance for cars to stop before road narrows.
